Bangladesh: badass classmates disrupt child marriage and bring back girl student to school

Here is good news from Bangladesh, which restores a little bit of confidence in the humanity inherent in us.

Last year in a school of Bangladesh, in Sunamgonj, some students gave the assault on a child marriage of a classmate girl (14 years old) and were later rewarded by the president of the province. One year later, the issue repeated: a group of students from the same school breaks into the child marriage of a 12-year-old classmate girl and bring her back to school.

It is yesterday’s news that the child marriage of a girl in a rural area of the province of Sunamgonj was to be celebrated. The prof. Mofazzol Hossain, a school teacher, comes to know the thing from a classmate of the girl. The student was invited to inform also the school principal. Among the girl’s schoolmates a group is gathered fierce to block the wedding.

This morning, the principal rents a motorboat, which can allow the students to reach the place of the wedding at a distance of 1.5 km of waterway. A group of 20 schoolmate girls set out on the adventure. When they reach the bride’s home, they promptly remind her mother that child marriage is illegal in Bangladesh, as well as immoral, and they take the promise that the family will not proceed with this criminal project. After that, they pick up the girl and, loading her on the motorboat, bring her back to school. This noon time they dununced the issue also to the municipal authorities and the local police.

The mayor of the village stated: “After hearing the story, we ordered the kazi (islamic religious officer who registers marriages) of the Mosque not to proceed with the registration of this marriage, as illegal. We took his promise that he will not register marriages of girls under 18 years.”

The principal told, “I’m thrilled to see my students determined to stop any child marriage. I’m glad to see that for the second time my students have taken firmly action against this crime. It was my ethical duty too cooperate with them.”
