The historic visit of Barack Obama in Havana has not seen Raul Castro at the airport. He did not come to welcome the President of the United States. Instead he paid tribute to Pope Francis and the Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill, and all the other world leaders visiting Cuba.
Accompanied by First Lady Michelle and the two daughters, Obama has set foot in Cuba getting off with a open umbrella from the AirForceOne, landed at Jose Marti airport in Havana under a gray sky and a light rain. Waiting for him, the Cuban Foreign Minister. Not even the shadow of Raul Castro. Usually, however, the Cuban president welcomes international guests as they arrive at the airport.
Clearly, the Castro regime has preferred not to give too much importance to the event, at least today. Awaiting Obama and his family, in addition to the Cuban Foreign Minister, who offered a bouquet of flowers to Michelle, and his mother (?), there were several American and Cuban diplomats.
Obama – running for a shelter – stated that he did not feel at all “offended” by the lack of hospitality. He is happy to be in Cuba. He trusts in the coming days.
