“Hijab Festival” at the “Muslim Woman’s Day” in Modena

Muslim women of a Mosque in Modena to teach Italian women how to wear the hijab.

It was an initiative in the integration mark to teach Italian women there is nothing wrong about hijab. The odd project took place a fortnight after the western “Women’s Day”, it was attended by Muslim and non-muslim, women, men, families, girls wearing headscarves and without.

According to Islamic precepts, it was not an obvious celebration because Islam does not celebrate Western and Secular festivals. The Mosque of Modena, “House of Wisdom, Mercy and Coexistence” has crossed the barriers, and not new to such initiatives it has reached out to Italian women, without exceeding the “Islamically correct”.

“It is not the first time we organize the Women’s Day and it is not the first secular initiative we celebrate in the mosque,” said Adil Laamane, vice president of the Islamic Community of Modena. In addition to the “Open Mosque” day, the “House of Wisdom” celebrates every year the April 25 (Victory Day) and June 2 (Republic day) ie Italian civil occurrences: in this way the Center differs from other mosques.

The girls of the “House of Wisdom”, national affiliate to the organization “Muslim Participation and Spirituality”, have set up a halal buffet and a stall reserved for Italian women to wear hijab: the Islamic headscarf!

In the hall packed by the crowd, the spokesman Adil Laamane said: “Speaking of the status of women in the Islamic world is right and necesssary, especially in these times when Islam and veiled women are targeted and blamed.” Imam Idriss Bakari spoke of “women” as a central theme of the Qur’an: “With the advent of Islam in Arabia begins the process of emancipation of Arab women who until then enjoyed an unenviable status. The hijab is one of the major developments introduced by Islam.”

The headscarf, then, as a symbol of freedom and emancipation and women’s independence factor, said Amal Chitam. Then the councilor for the Social Policies of the City of Modena Giuliana Urbelli took the floor, declaring she attended there “to build the society of the future”. Marco Coltellacci, the bishop’s secretary, said: “Celebrate the Woman’s Day in Mosque is a gesture of great importance.” Emanuela Gozzi of the CGIL said: “We are ready to build a new society with the Muslims of Modena.”
