The “strange case” of Monteviasco, village hanged on a wire

Only a cable car connecting it to the rest of the world. Seven the inhabitants. But they don’t give up.

Monteviasco, in the province of Varese, is the only country in Lombardy, Italy, not to be reached by any road. It can be reached only by cable car or by foot, in about one hour walk along an old mule track of one thousand and four hundreds steps.

The small village of the Veddasca valley, nestled on the slopes of Monte Pola, has lived for years in seclusion and still its atmosphere brings the clock back through time. A month ago the cable car broke and the seven inhabitants of the village were cut off for several weeks. Today the damage has been repaired and the small community is again reachable.

“I hope that the next year will be found funds for the maintenance – says Gino, 65 years – I’m afraid of an interruption of the service. Without cable car Monteviasco dies and so we do.” A village truly “hanged on a wire”, as was also called by the mayor of Curiglia with Monteviasco, Ambrogio Rossi.
