Chief adviser of the temple committee, Jagadish Chandra Pramanik said that he lodged a complaint against 16 people at the police station in this regard. He said, “In the afternoon, militants attacked the temple in front of me. 25-30 militants entered into the temple and vandalised 3 idols. They then cut down the fruit trees in the temple compound. We did not go to rescue for fear of being attacked.”

In another shocking incident reported from Naogaon district of northern Bangladesh, a Hindu couple were tied to a tree, beaten and an attempt was made to seize their land. Their house was also vandalised. In Chattogram district of south-eastern Bangladesh, ancestral land belonging to a Hindu family has been grabbed and the family has been evicted by a Muslim man named Abul Khair. When a case was filed in the court in this regard, the accused attacked the victim Shimul Dar in the court premises, Bangladeshi Bengali-language satellite and cable television channel South Asian Television (SA TV) has reported on its website.

Even the highly-educated professional class of Bangladeshi Hindus is not safe. A noted Hindu physicist has also become a victim of Islamist land grabbing. Due to the negligence of local authorities, Yahia Ferdous, the mutawalli of a waqf estate, has occupied a strip of land of his neighbour – renowned physicist Prof Arun Kumar Basak – since 2003 in Rajshahi city’s Sagarpara area, reports Bangladeshi English language daily newspaper The Daily Star. Despite the legal verdict going against him, Ferdous has continued to illegally occupy the land and harass the 82-year-old educationist for years.
