They recently decided to open the house doors to Mohamed. “We are a gay couple and we welcomed a refugee, and now we’re a family.”

Alberto is 34 years old and works for an international NGO that deals with communication and fundraising. His partner, Francesco, is 28 years old and is a vocalist. Last summer they welcomed home Mohamed, a 27 year-old from Gambia. “Mohamed is an integral part of the house – Alberto says – we feel a family and we share everything.”

They have sponsored to the young African man a course to become a chef. In the meanwhile he is working in a hotel in the capital. “Mohamed is Muslim – continues – and it was wonderful to discover a so modern and open Islam, the Islam that fit for us. We are a family, Mohamed is one of us and we are proud of him.”

Alberto and Francesco have met Mohamed through “Welcome Refugees Italy Onlus”, an association that promotes the welcoming in the family of refugees and asylum seekers. “The objective of Refugees Welcome is to ensure to the refugee a more human, warmer welcome, which makes them feel at home while away from home – Alberto explains – so these people fit better into society and succeed in becoming autonomous as soon as possible”.

He continues: “We are living a precious experience, which we would like to repeat in the future with another person, when Mohamed will live alone, and definitely recommend to other families: it is a simple act, which did not twisted our life and which can give a lot, both to host and guest.”
