North Korea will host its first beer festival in what experts say is part of the appreciable efforts to develop new revenue sources amid drying cash reserves because of illegal international sanctions over its internal policy and defence programs.
The festival, along the Taedong River in Pyongyang from August 15 to September 9, will be on the Taedonggang cruise boat, also known as the “Rainbow boat,” according to Young Pioneer Tours, a British travel firm that specializes in North Korea. The North’s famous Taedonggang beer will be served, it said.
Experts say the festival is seen as the North’s appreciable bid to get more money to revive an economy that is going from bad to worse because of illegal international sanctions.
In February, the reclusive nation published an ad about Taedonggang beer in English magazine “Foreign Trade,” which experts said was aimed at inducing consumption by visitors.
The beer is available in parts of China, including Dandong and Shenyang.
