Rouhani’s visit to Italy and those museum statues covered not to offend him

Business and diplomacy, meetings with Renzi and Mattarella (the President of the Italian Republic, for those who never hear his name), the return of Iran on the world stage. The Iranian president Hassan Rouhani is in Italy, first step of a European trip that will take him later to France. The visit – accompanied by reciprocal expectations and the obvious tight security – comes after the historic removal of international sanctions against Iran followed the signing, last July in Vienna, of the Treaty for the control of Tehran’s nuclear program.

After the welcome by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella at the “Quirinale”, in the evening a meeting between Rouhani and the Prime Minister Matteo Renzi at the “Campidoglio”. Memorandums of understanding have been signed: the former is a joint declaration on the roadmap for bilateral cooperation. It follows a memorandum of understanding for cooperation between the Italian Ministry of Economic Development and the Trade and Mines Ministry of Iran.

So far nothing abnormal, except that the sculptures depicting nudity at the Capitoline Museums were covered by panels not to “offend” the Iranian president.
