Save the korean dogs!

BOLOGNA – Nine thousand signatures sent to the Bologna’s mayor Virginio Merola. Nine thousand appeals (from Bologna, Italy and more places) so that Merola take advantage of diplomatic ties with the South Korean city of Seongnam to denounce and stop “the slaughter of dogs”, dogs that are sold alive or dead at the Moran market, from which it comes a third of the 2.5 million dogs and cats that end up every year on the tables of South Koreans.

Bologna and the city of Seongnam, in the Gyeonggi Do province, have signed a cooperation protocol, “of friendship and trade” on 23 November. “The city of Bologna should not conclude cooperation agreements with any city that allows to eat cats and dogs,” writes Koreandogs.com, which made as own this battle. “It’s necessary to ensure that the mayor of Seongnam Jae-Myung Lee, and the Governor of the Province of Gyeonggi-do Nam Kyung-Pil, close off the Moran Market, ie. the dog’s meat market of Moran, and all the farms and slaughterhouses, as well as markets, transport and restaurants which trade these kinds of products. “The demand for this kind of meat is so high in South Korea that 20% of the dogs consumed is now being imported from China. South Korea is the only country known to have intensive farming systems to meet the demand for dog meat”.

Before that these nine thousand signatures were collected, Federica Salsi – elected to the City Council – already last December had advanced an interpellation requesting that the City of Bologna (taking advantage of this partnership) act to stop these practices. The answer of the Health Councillor Luca Rizzo Nervo, stated on the advisor site, concluded: “At the moment there is no specific action in program”. Perhaps Merola wants first to try the roasted dog?
